From the good read- a random thought

In this series we take an article or book and explain a thought arising from “the good read”. This month we look at an article by Matthew James Seidel entitled “The Luddites were right”, itself a tangent of thought he took from reading Gavin Mueller’s book “Breaking things at work” (sub-title “The Luddites were right about why you hate your job”).

In our article, “The Emperor’s Artificial Clothes”- we feed of the title not the content, although Seidel’s article qualifies as a “good read”!

Background: The Good Read: “The Luddites were right”.

The author has long considered himself a “Luddite” being the word ascribed to technophobes- being people who lag in practice and understanding of new technologies. The word stems from the violent protests of English Weavers in the second decade of the 19th Century during the Industrial Revolution. They protested automated machinery as a threat to both their lifestyle and their jobs. The government reacted harshly, they hanged 17 men in York and others were transported to Australia.
